USS Wisconsin - BB-64

I had the privilege to visit the Wisconsin currently docked at Navy Park in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. It is a suitable place for one of the great battleships of our history. A couple of impressions:

  • 1. As I walked the teak wood decks, I understood the majesty of this proud ship. It is no wonder men wanted to serve aboard these great ships.
  • 2. There are three turrets - each with three 16 inch guns. The turrets weight 3000 tons and can traverse their firing arc in 15 seconds. They are four decks deep including a firing deck, two powder decks and 1 magazine deck.
  • 3. BB-64 has 8 generators capable of 1250 Kilovolts each. A generator would be slaved to each gun turret and a fourth generator was kept in reserve. The other four serviced the rest of the ship.
  • 4. The guns are capable firing a 2700 pound projectile 23 miles.
  • 5. BB-64 has a helicopter landing and tie downs of the aft fantail.
  • 6. She also carried 32 Tomahawk cruise missiles that were fired from rails along the superstructure.
  • 7. The last time she sailed in harm's way was the Persian Gulf War.
  • The cost is free. Further details are available at www.nauticus.org
