PC War

Political correctness afflicts the body politic like an insidious cancer at the conscience of common sense. The most publicly attacked faith in America happens to be Christianity (never mind that the Constitution derives it’s meaning from the Judeo/Christian ethic). America (actually all of western civilization) is locked in a war with Islamic Fascists, but woe to anyone who dares to criticize Islam.

Take Lieutenant General William Boykin—a veteran of every major (and probably a number of clandestine) operations since Desert One. [Editor’s Note: Desert One refers to Operation EAGLE CLAW, the aborted hostage rescue attempt in the Iranian desert 1979.] People who know General Boykin refer to him as a warrior’s warrior: a man who has put his life on line in defense of America.

General Boykin also happens to be an evangelical Christian. (Can you hear the lynch mob howling?) General Boykin has appeared in several churches around the country and expressed his personal views, including:

1. We are in a war of good versus evil where Satan is backing the terrorists.

2. Islamic fascists hate America because we are a nation of believers.

3. God appointed George Bush to be president at this time.

When the firestorm over his comments broke in October 2003, presidential candidate Howard (the Duck) Dean called for his resignation. Let me be upfront about this. I believe Governor Dean has disqualified himself for consideration as the next president. His copious comments regarding 9-11, Saddam Hussein and Libya suggest he does not have a firm grasp on reality. Therefore, I do not believe Governor Dean is qualified to tie General Boykin’s shoelaces.

Consider General Boykin’s comments.

Would American’s support the evil side in a war? History suggests differently. In World War II, America opposed the Axis powers of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan. During the Cold War, America confronted the Soviet Union. Recent wars in Kuwait, Afghanistan, Panama and Iraq have not been of conquest, but liberation. As I recall, it was not a bunch of Baptists who brought down the World Trade Center.

Hate certainly is a component in the current struggle. What else explains the desire to enslave Afghanistan, butcher thousands and maybe even million in Iraq and to prosecute a suicide bombing campaign? Does the hatred come from America’s support for Israel? Does it come from envy and jealousy over America’s success? Is it the fear of being eclipsed by western civilization? I would submit that it is all of the above. The Islamic world has failed to repudiate the 9-11 hijackers or the Hamas suicide bombers. They were curiously silent regarding the capture of Saddam Hussein, and the politically correct left continues to spin outlandish theories about the progress of the War on Terror.

I would like to suggest that extraordinary men have risen to lead countries during exceptionally trying times. Lincoln during the American Civil War; Churchill and Roosevelt during World War II; Reagan during the Cold War; Bush during the War on Terror. Regardless, of whether or not you agree with their domestic policies, these men put American sovereignty and security ahead of personal aggrandizement. I would argue that history is not happenstance, but a purposeful movement of God. I don’t believe the men mentioned above each had a personal relationship with God, but I do believe they were the right men in the right place at the right time. Indeed, Americans breathed a collective sigh of relief when they realized George Bush and not Al Gore was leading us to confront the Islamic Fascists after 9-11.

Wars are not politically correct events; rather they are defining moments where a people must determine if the sacrifice of blood and treasure is worth the goal. You might not agree with General Boykin, but he does have a right to express his views. Our war with the Islamic Fascists is just, but our language is confused.

Political correctness muddles our thoughts as we attempt to be open minded and reasonable. The 9-11 attacks were not reasonable or open minded. They damaged our economy and threatened our liberty. Survival dictates that our response be nothing less than the annihilation of the Islamic Fascists who picked this fight. That might not be politically correct, but it is honest.
