Slaughter of Innocents

Terri Schiavo and her fight for life illuminates the terrible condition of our judicial system. We conservatives love to pontificate about the rule of law and the need to follow the constitution. Once again the sticky issues of life and death bring into stark contrast the desire to preserve the rule of law and the need for common sense.

The rule of law did not work for Terri. Common sense did not prevail. What happened was the senseless slaughter of a defenseless person. There are higher laws than the United States Federal Code. There is a Judge greater than 11th Circuit. The right-to-die crowd got what they wanted, but I suspect they will come to rue the day that Terri died.

Congress passed a special law directing the federal courts to review the Terri Schiavo case, and the President came back from his ranch to sign the law. It is clear that the intent of the “Terri’s Law” was to reinsert her feeding tube so that the issues about her state of health could be sorted out anew.

The federal courts decided to expressly ignore the direction of congress and the president, in effect they ignored the rest of us.

As we have seen, the right-to-die crowd successfully murdered Terri. Murder—now there’s a provocative word. I don’t know what else to call it. We watched for almost two weeks as the Florida courts starved a woman to death. Some used to call this mercy killing, but I witnessed no mercy here.

At the end of the day, Terri was Bob Schindler’s little girl. If it were one of my little girls (both gorgeous young women these days), God help the man responsible. For I know I would never rest until I saw justice done. I doubt Bob Schindler will quit the field either.

The Son of God had some apt words for those who twisted logic and made wrong right.

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. (Matthew 23:15 NIV)

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices–mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law–justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. (Matthew 23:23,24 NIV)

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. (Matthew 23:27 NIV)

Things haven’t change much. It seems we are still sinners in need of the Savior.
