Targets
July 7, 2005 terrorists detonated multiple bombs aboard double-decker buses and inside the London tubes. They maimed hundreds and killed dozens. The explosions duplicated the military precision demonstrated during the Madrid attacks.
July 21, 2005 terrorists strike again. Only this time only the detonators explode and the main bombs fail to explode. Puzzled and confused that the detonation did not usher in seventy-two virgins, the martyr wannabes run away.
July 24, 2005 terrorists shattered the night at the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh. Seven car bombs turn luxury hotels and quaint shops into piles of rubble. It is the worst attack on tourists since terrorists attacked a bus in Luxor, killing 63 and injuring 26.
July 29, 2005 British authorities announce they have captured the remaining members of the terrorist cell responsible for the bombing in the London Tube and Bus system.
July 31, 2005 a poll indicates that over 100,000 people in Great Britain support the bombings. Obviously, open immigration is not working out quite the way people expected.
August 1, 2005 the British amend their optimistic statement by admitting that rounded up more terrorists.
Consider the following facts:
The American response was to stand shoulder to shoulder with the British in their time of need and loss. This was an honorable and good thing.
Our response was to heighten security for ground transport in this country. In New York they decided to search every fifth person getting on the train.
Huh?
It wasn’t Norwegians who set off the bombs. It wasn’t a Japanese who had a garage full of bomb making material. It wasn’t little old ladies with knitting needles that soaked up all this hate. It was young Muslim men in their twenties and early thirties.
The time for profiling is now. This isn’t rocket science. It isn’t even a tough political decision. It is politically incorrect.
So what?
Profiling also requires common sense—something sorely lacking when it comes to securing airports and trains. Common sense also suggests that we make our enemies targets, regardless of the rhetoric pointing out our insensitive, boorish nature.
Tough.
