Nightmare Scenario
Huh?
Excuse me, but we are four and half years past the September 11th attack, and the common borders of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and Mexico still remain an open question.
The Department of Homeland Security likes to tell us that major terrorist incursions have occurred from the North. They cite the Millennium Bomber, who planned to blow up LAX as their primary evidence. Indeed, there is a vast northern border with Canada broken up by formidable geological formations such as the Great Lakes and The Rocky Mountains.
There are also differences:
The same cannot be said for the southern border. Despite our differences with the Canadian Government, I believe they are dedicated to the defeating al Qaeda. Mexico remains an open question. I still remember scenes of Mexicans cheering when the World Trade Center crashed to the ground.
So what happens if Iran develops a nuclear weapon, or North Korea sells one to a terrorist group? Does anyone for an instant believe that the infrastructure is in place to prevent transfer to Mexico and the physical crossing into America?
Play it out. What happens when this device is detonated in an American city?
It will not take very long to determine the source of the plutonium. The French Government declared last month that they will retaliate with nuclear weapons on any country that used WMDs on French soil. Will an American President be disinclined to respond should the trail point back to Pyongyang or Tehran? And what about Mexico?
Should the nightmare occur, the demand for military action along the southern border will be intense. Does anyone think the Mexicans can go toe-to-toe with the Marines?
Before we fund a guest worker program, we need to control the southern border. To do that we need people, technology and, like it or not, boots on the ground with guns.
